Abstract:
In this article, we discuss the two most commonly used pulsatile laser-delivery modes, Superpulse and Pulser, and compare their effects with each other, as well as with Continuous Wave (CW) delivery. In addition, because a firm understanding of basic laser-tissue interactions is key to knowledgeably and sensibly using lasers, regardless of the delivery mode, we present an overview of some basic principles; readers interested in a greater level of detail should consult other sources for a fuller understanding of the issues. We also discuss current clinical perceptions surrounding the use of pulsatile modes and considerations in selecting a mode to achieve the desired effects. Although some of the concepts in this article may apply to lasers using other wavelengths, the emphasis here is primarily on CO2 lasers.
