Summary

Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is increasingly common in Denmark, with outcomes comparable to international standards. Further centralization and reduced conversion rates are recommended for this minimally invasive surgical approach.

Area of Science:

  • Surgical innovation
  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Endocrine surgery

Background:

  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy offers advantages over open procedures, including reduced mortality, morbidity, and hospital stays.
  • The current organization and short-term outcomes of adrenalectomy in Denmark are not well-documented.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the organization and short-term outcomes of adrenalectomy in Denmark.
  • To assess the adoption and effectiveness of laparoscopic adrenalectomy in a national context.

Main Methods:

  • Data were extracted and analyzed from the Danish National Patient Register and discharge notes.
  • The study period covered adrenalectomies performed between 2002 and 2006.

Published on: April 4, 2025

  • A total of 297 adrenalectomies were identified, with 161 performed laparoscopically (approximately 54% in the identified cases).
  • Laparoscopic procedures were concentrated in university hospitals, with a conversion rate of 7.6%.
  • Mortality was 1%, complication rates were 25% for open and 16% for laparoscopic surgery, and mean postoperative stays were 6.0 days (open) vs. 2.9 days (laparoscopic).

Conclusions:

  • The use of laparoscopic adrenalectomy in Denmark is growing, reaching about 65% of procedures.
  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomies are performed in specialized centers with high surgical volume and multidisciplinary support.
  • While outcomes align with international levels, reducing the conversion rate and potentially centralizing procedures further are recommended.
