Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the growth-inhibitory effects and mechanisms of type I interferons (IFNs) on human liver cancer cells.
- To evaluate the efficacy of different type I IFN preparations in preclinical models.

- In vitro analysis of five type I IFN preparations (pegylated/nonpegylated IFN-alpha, IFN-beta) on 13 liver cancer cell lines.
- In vivo studies involving subcutaneous administration of IFN preparations to nude mice bearing human liver cancer xenografts.

- IFN-beta exhibited the strongest growth-inhibitory effects in vitro.
- IFN-induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis were identified as key mechanisms of action.
- Pegylated IFN demonstrated superior antitumor efficacy compared to nonpegylated forms in vivo, with dose-dependent tumor reduction.
Conclusions:
- Type I IFNs, particularly pegylated interferon, show promise for the prevention and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.
- Further clinical investigation of pegylated IFN for HCC is warranted based on these preclinical findings.
