Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) revealed progressive neurological dysfunction in cattle with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). This study highlights BAEP as a tool for detecting auditory pathway disorders in BSE-infected animals.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Neurology
- Neurophysiology
- Prion Diseases
Background:
- Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease in cattle.
- Early detection of neurological dysfunction is crucial for understanding BSE progression.
- Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) assess the integrity of the auditory pathway.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate neurological dysfunction in experimentally-induced bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) cattle.
- To characterize changes in brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) associated with BSE.
- To correlate BAEP findings with clinical neurological symptoms in BSE.
Main Methods:
- Experimentally-induced bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle.
- Assessment of neurological dysfunction using brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP).
- Bilateral recording of BAEP wave latencies and amplitudes.
Main Results:
- Progressive prolongation of BAEP peak latencies (waves III and V) bilaterally.
- Significant prolongation of wave V latency and I-V interpeak latency (IPL) at 22-24 months post-inoculation (P<0.05).
- Reduced BAEP wave amplitudes in BSE cattle compared to controls; hearing loss correlated with advanced symptoms like tremor.
Conclusions:
- BAEP data reflects functional disorders in central auditory nerve pathways in experimentally-induced BSE.
- BAEP can identify auditory pathway abnormalities characteristic of BSE.
- These findings support the utility of BAEP in diagnosing and monitoring neurological changes in BSE.
