Mental health disorders following childbirth are common. The nature and treatment of mental disorders occurring in the perinatal period may differ from those occurring at other times but there are also false beliefs that postnatal depression differs in important ways from other depressions. Vulnerable women can be identified in the antenatal period, and intervention before delivery can prevent or lessen the severity of postnatal psychiatric problems. Various treatment options are available for professionals to discuss with mothers.
