Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Neurology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Exophthalmos, or proptosis, is the protrusion of the eyeball.
  • Optic nerve meningiomas are rare tumors that can cause exophthalmos.
  • Initial examinations may not reveal the cause of exophthalmos.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a case of exophthalmos caused by an optic nerve meningioma.
  • To highlight the diagnostic process for exophthalmos.
  • To discuss imaging findings and differential diagnoses for optic nerve meningioma.

Main Methods:

  • Clinical examination (ophthalmological and endocrinological).
  • Laboratory tests (thyroid hormones).
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the orbit and brain.

Main Results:

  • A 75-year-old male presented with a 6-year history of right-sided exophthalmos.
  • Ophthalmological, endocrinological evaluations, and lab tests were unremarkable.
  • MRI confirmed an optic nerve meningioma as the cause of proptosis.

Conclusions:

  • Optic nerve meningioma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of exophthalmos.
  • MRI is crucial for diagnosing optic nerve meningioma.
  • Timely diagnosis and management are essential for preserving vision.
