Abstract:
FloSeal hemostatic matrix has been reported to be effective for the control of intraoperative bleeding in various surgeries. We report 3 patients who experienced a possible allergic response to FloSeal with the formation of excessive granulation tissue and fibrosis that were associated with early postoperative pelvic pain that led to additional surgical intervention.
Insights
FloSeal hemostatic matrix may cause allergic reactions, including excessive granulation tissue and fibrosis. These adverse events in three patients led to pelvic pain and further surgery.
Area of Science:
- Surgical innovation
- Biomaterials science
- Adverse event reporting
Background:
- FloSeal hemostatic matrix is widely used for intraoperative bleeding control.
- Its efficacy in various surgical settings is well-documented.
- Potential adverse effects require ongoing investigation.
Observation:
- Three patients presented with unusual postoperative complications after FloSeal use.
- These complications included excessive granulation tissue and fibrosis.
- The observed tissue reactions were linked to early pelvic pain.
Findings:
- The patients experienced a possible allergic response to FloSeal hemostatic matrix.
- Excessive granulation tissue and fibrosis were significant findings.
- This led to severe early postoperative pelvic pain necessitating re-operation.
Implications:
- This case series highlights potential, previously underreported adverse reactions to FloSeal.
- Clinicians should be vigilant for allergic responses and associated complications.
- Further research into the immunogenicity and long-term tissue effects of FloSeal is warranted.
