Background:

  • Subclinical hypothyroidism affects 5-15% of the population, particularly females, and may be linked to cardiovascular disease.
  • Arterial stiffening, measured by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), is a predictor of cardiovascular events.
  • Previous studies showed increased baPWV in subclinical hypothyroidism without thyroiditis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess changes in baPWV in female subclinical hypothyroidism patients with autoimmune chronic thyroiditis (Hashimoto's disease).
  • To evaluate the effect of levothyroxine (l-T(4)) replacement therapy on baPWV after restoring normal thyroid function.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized placebo-controlled study involving 95 female subclinical hypothyroid patients with Hashimoto's disease.
