This study analyzed umbilical hernia repair outcomes, finding an 8.9% recurrence rate. While no significant independent risk factors were identified, larger hernia size and higher BMI may increase recurrence risk.
Area of Science:
- Abdominal Surgery
- Hernia Repair
- Surgical Outcomes
Background:
- Umbilical hernia repair has a high recurrence rate (19-54%) with primary suture techniques.
- Limited attention has been given to umbilical hernias compared to other abdominal wall hernias.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze the results of umbilical hernia repair.
- To assess independent risk factors influencing umbilical hernia recurrence.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of 97 patients undergoing umbilical hernia repair (2001-2006).
- Evaluation of age, sex, hernia size, BMI, complications, and recurrence.
- Comparison of open suture repair (keel technique) and open mesh repair (onlay technique).
Main Results:
- The overall recurrence rate was 8.9%.
- Patients with BMI >30 kg/m² (10.7%) and hernia size >2 cm (10.5%) showed a trend towards higher recurrence.
- Open suture repair was used in 94.8% of cases, with 5 recurrences; mesh repair was used in 5.2%, with 1 recurrence.
Conclusions:
- No statistically significant independent risk factors for umbilical hernia recurrence were identified in this study.
- Higher patient body mass index and hernia size >2 cm are suggested as potential risk factors based on literature review.
