Summary
Microsatellite instability (MSI) was investigated in nasal cancers. MSI may play a role in squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal cavity, but not in intestinal-type sinonasal adenocarcinoma.

Background:
- Intestinal-type sinonasal adenocarcinoma (ITAC) and squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal cavity (SCCNC) share histopathological similarities with other cancers but differ etiologically.
- Microsatellite instability (MSI) is implicated in the development of both ITAC and SCCNC.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the potential role of MSI in the pathogenesis of ITAC and SCCNC.
- To differentiate the etiological pathways of these two nasal malignancies.
Main Methods:
- DNA from 41 ITAC and 24 SCCNC tumor samples was analyzed.
- Multiplex PCR was used to detect shifts in five mononucleotide microsatellite loci.
Main Results:
- Microsatellite instability was detected in 2% of ITAC cases.
- Microsatellite instability was identified in 21% of SCCNC cases.
Conclusions:
- MSI may be involved in the development of squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal cavity.
- MSI does not appear to be a significant factor in the pathogenesis of sinonasal adenocarcinoma.
