W A Cassell

    Canadian Psychiatric Association Journal
    |August 1, 1977
    PubMed
    Summary

A new therapy technique uses anatomical inkblots to reduce body image anxiety from conversion symptoms and psychophysiologic disorders. This method helps desensitize patients by reducing anxiety associated with pathological imagery during relaxation.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Psychiatry
    • Psychotherapy

    Background:

    • Conversion symptoms and psychophysiologic disorders can cause significant body image anxiety.
    • Existing therapies may not fully address the psychophysiological components of these conditions.

    Observation:

    • A novel therapy technique involves the projective use of inkblots with high anatomical content.
    • This technique stimulates somatic images in consciousness within a relaxed state.

    Findings:

    • The activation of pathological anatomical imagery during relaxation leads to a reduction in anxiety content.
    • A case study demonstrated successful desensitization treatment for premature ejaculation, a psychophysiologic symptom.

    Implications:

    • This innovative technique offers a new approach for desensitizing individuals with body image anxiety.
    • Clinical investigators are alerted to this technical innovation for potential application in treating psychoneurotic patients.
