Background:

  • The maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) represents the highest exercise intensity sustainable without progressive blood lactate accumulation.
  • Identifying MLSS is critical for optimizing training programs and predicting endurance capacity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if the ventilatory threshold (Thv) can reliably indicate the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS).
  • To assess the highest work rate (W) at which blood lactate concentration ([la]b) remains stable during constant intensity exercise.

Main Methods:

  • Healthy male subjects performed ramp exercise tests to determine the work rate at ventilatory threshold (WThv).
  • Subjects then completed 30-minute constant intensity exercise trials at WThv and 4.9% above WThv.
