Background:

  • The British Association of Urological Surgeons Section of Endourology established a mentorship program for laparoscopic nephrectomy in 1999.
  • Evaluating the long-term success and sustainability of laparoscopic practices initiated through mentorship is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the outcomes of a laparoscopic nephrectomy mentorship program.
  • To assess the ability of mentored urologists to establish and sustain independent laparoscopic practices.

Main Methods:

  • Mentors were surveyed in 2007 regarding the number of training visits and the success of their mentees in establishing and sustaining laparoscopic nephrectomy practices.
  • Data collected included procedure numbers, conversions to open surgery, major complications, and practice sustainability.

Main Results:

  • A total of 164 laparoscopic nephrectomies were performed during the training of 39 urologists over 148 mentorship visits.
  • No conversions to open surgery and only one major complication were reported.
  • 29 out of 39 mentored urologists established independent laparoscopic practices, with 23 maintaining them; larger departments and higher case volumes were associated with sustainability.

Conclusions:

  • The mentorship program for laparoscopic nephrectomy has been conducted safely.
  • Establishing a sustainable laparoscopic practice necessitates a critical volume of cases.
  • Future mentorship efforts should prioritize trainees over established consultants.
