Summary

Decompressive surgery for leprosy nerve damage shows no added benefit over steroid treatment alone. Further research is needed to confirm the effectiveness of combined surgical and medical interventions for nerve function improvement.

  • No significant difference in nerve function improvement was observed between surgery plus prednisolone and prednisolone alone after two years.
  • Adverse effects associated with decompressive surgery were not sufficiently detailed in the included studies.
  • Conclusions:

    • Current evidence from randomized controlled trials does not support a significant added benefit of decompressive surgery over steroid treatment alone for leprosy nerve damage.
    • High-quality randomized controlled trials are necessary to determine the effectiveness of combining surgery with medical treatment versus medical treatment alone.
