Group polarization is the strengthening of an original group attitude following the discussion of views within a group (Teger & Pruitt, 1967). That is, if a group initially favors a viewpoint, after discussion the group consensus is likely a stronger endorsement of the viewpoint. Conversely, if the group was initially opposed to a viewpoint, group discussion would likely lead to stronger opposition.

Not all intergroup interactions lead to negative outcomes. Sometimes, being in a group situation can improve performance. Social facilitation occurs when an individual performs better when an audience is watching than when the individual performs the behavior alone. This typically occurs when people are performing a task for which they are skilled.

A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is bullying.

Social Proof

Social proof is a form of persuasion based on comparison and conformity. People compare their behavior and actions to what others are doing and will change to conform to do what their peers do.

Background:

Professional nursing organizations are vital for peer interaction and advancing patient care excellence.
Nurses face significant challenges from patients, families, and healthcare systems.
Geographical distance hindered the formation of local chapters for the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN) in South Dakota.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore the formation of a professional nursing organization chapter in a geographically dispersed area.
To assess the feasibility of using teleconference technology for chapter organization and member engagement.
To address the need for professional support and learning opportunities for rehabilitation nurses.

Main Methods:

A local chapter of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN) was organized in South Dakota.
Teleconference technology was utilized to connect rehabilitation nurses across large geographical distances.
The chapter aimed to facilitate interaction, support, and learning among members.
