Implementing the ISO/IEEE 11073 standard for medical devices (MD) and computer engines (CE) is simplified with two new strategies. These approaches reduce complexity and development time for engineers using the standard.
Area of Science:
- Medical Informatics
- Software Engineering
- Telecommunications
Background:
- The ISO/IEEE 11073 standard presents significant implementation challenges due to its complexity and demanding requirements.
- These challenges have hindered widespread adoption by software engineers, particularly for resource-constrained medical devices (MD).
Purpose of the Study:
- To address the complexity and adoption barriers of the ISO/IEEE 11073 standard.
- To propose practical implementation strategies that cater to diverse use cases and user expertise levels.
Main Methods:
- Developed a low-memory, low-processor usage strategy for medical devices (MD) utilizing message patterns for simplified ISO/IEEE 11073 message generation and processing.
- Introduced an adaptive Plug&Play (P&P) solution for computer engines (CE), such as data loggers and gateways, offering a general platform for accessing standard-compliant devices.
- Combined both strategies to create a comprehensive framework for ISO/IEEE 11073 implementations.
Main Results:
- The proposed strategies significantly ease the handling of the ISO/IEEE 11073 standard for non-expert users.
- A framework for medical devices (MD) with optimized resource usage was established.
- A flexible P&P solution for computer engines (CE) was provided, enabling access to a wide range of devices.
Conclusions:
- The dual-strategy approach effectively mitigates the complexity of ISO/IEEE 11073 implementation.
- Combining the MD-focused and CE-focused strategies accelerates application development time for systems utilizing the ISO/IEEE 11073 standard.
- These solutions promote broader adoption and efficient utilization of the standard in healthcare technology.
