Rural healthcare settings face challenges in sustaining their workforces.
Nurse job satisfaction in rural areas is linked to available resources and support systems.
Understanding rural nurses' unique needs is vital for retention.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine if rural nurses receive adequate resources and support to address practice challenges.
Investigating the link between support systems and the sustainability of the rural nursing workforce.

Main Methods:

Semi-structured interviews with 21 managers and 44 staff nurses in 19 rural Ontario hospitals.
Thematic analysis of interview transcripts using a healthy work environment model.
Identification and analysis of major work-life themes impacting rural nurses.

Main Results:

Workforce sustainability is influenced by the balance of demands and resources, social support, and nurse influence.
Sufficient resources and support enable nurses to view challenges as stimulating rather than overwhelming.
Resource deficits negatively impact nurse well-being, patient care, and practice.

Conclusions:

Nurses feel powerless and frustrated without adequate resources, support, and influence.
Strategies for sustainability include stress reduction resources, targeted education, and employment preferences.
Addressing resources, support, and influence is key to overcoming rural nursing challenges and ensuring workforce longevity.
