Background:

Previous cross-sectional studies suggest a link between allergies and major depression.
Longitudinal data is lacking to clarify the directionality of this association.
This study investigates the relationship from a longitudinal perspective.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the longitudinal association between major depression and the incidence of non-food and food allergies.
To determine if major depression predicts the development of allergies.
To assess if allergies predict the development of major depression.

Main Methods:

Utilized data from the Canadian National Population Health Survey (NPHS) from 1994 to 2002.
Assessed major depression using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview short form (CIDI-SF).
Included self-reported professionally diagnosed non-food and food allergies.
Employed proportional hazards models for longitudinal analysis.

Main Results:

A slightly increased incidence of non-food allergies was observed in individuals with major depression (adjusted hazard ratio 1.2, p=0.046).
No significant association was found between major depression and the incidence of food allergies.
No evidence supported an increased incidence of major depression associated with non-food or food allergies.

Conclusions:

Major depression appears to be associated with an increased risk of developing non-food allergies.
The reverse association (allergies leading to depression) was not supported by the data.
Potential underlying mechanisms include shared genetic, epigenetic, or immunological factors.
