Summary

A dog diagnosed with protothecosis showed disseminated green algae infection, identified as Chlorella. This marks the first reported case in a companion animal and the first instance of widespread Chlorella infection.

  • Postmortem examination revealed widespread green discoloration in multiple organs, including the tongue, lungs, lymph nodes, liver, and spinal meninges.
  • Histological examination identified pyogranulomatous inflammation and algal organisms within these tissues.

Findings:

  • Ultrastructural and histochemical analyses confirmed the organisms as Chlorella, a type of green alga.
