Summary

Primary copper-associated hepatitis is likely occurring in Labrador Retrievers. This study identified characteristic liver lesions and high copper levels in affected dogs, suggesting a breed predisposition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if copper-associated hepatitis occurs in Labrador Retrievers.
  • To characterize the pathological findings in affected dogs.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of cases from a diagnostic laboratory.
  • Histopathological examination of liver tissues stained with rhodanine.
  • Quantitative analysis of liver copper levels.

Main Results:

  • Sixteen Labrador Retrievers (4-11 years old) exhibited centrilobular hepatitis with copper and hemosiderin-laden macrophages.
  • Associated lesions included pigmented granulomas, hepatocellular necrosis, cholestasis, and fibrosis.
  • Liver copper levels exceeded 2,000 parts per million dry weight in most affected dogs.

Conclusions:

  • Findings are consistent with primary copper-associated hepatitis in Labrador Retrievers.
  • Suggests a potential breed predisposition to copper accumulation and hepatitis.
