The phenomenon of microalbuminuria formerly regarded solely as an early manifestation of hypertensive and diabetic nephropathy is presently believed to be an integral marker of poor prognosis due to the establishment of its importance as a sign of overall endothelial dysfunction. Risk factors of microalbuminuria, mechanisms of its development, prognostic value, and approaches to the elimination of this disorder are discussed.
