Hearing01:31

Hearing

56.8K
When we hear a sound, our nervous system is detecting sound waves—pressure waves of mechanical energy traveling through a medium. The frequency of the wave is perceived as pitch, while the amplitude is perceived as loudness.

Types of Fever01:25

Types of Fever

1.1K
Fever can be triggered by several factors, including infections, nervous system disorders, certain cancers, blood diseases like leukemia, embolism, thrombosis, heatstroke, dehydration, surgical trauma, crushing injuries, and allergic reactions.
Here are the different types of fever:

Methods of reducing fever

The signs and symptoms of fever include hot and dry skin, flushed face, thirst, muscle aches, anorexia, headache, tachycardia, tachypnea, and fatigue. Elevated body temperature is reduced using two methods: pharmacological and nonpharmacological. Proper identification and treatment of the root cause of a fever is of utmost importance.

Line Loss01:10

Line Loss

520
The different configurations of source-load connections include wye (star) and delta connections. The relationship between line and phase voltages and currents varies depending on the configuration. When the source is supplying power, it is transmitted through the wires to the load, and during this transmission, some power is absorbed by the wires, leading to line loss.
Line loss impacts power delivery efficiency in a balanced three-phase circuit. The symmetry in such a circuit simplifies the...

Reducing Line Loss01:18

Reducing Line Loss

372
In a three-phase circuit, line loss is an indicator of energy dissipated as heat due to the resistance of transmission lines. To address this, incorporating transformers into the system—a step-up transformer at the source and a step-down transformer at the load—is a strategic solution. Two three-phase transformers are introduced to improve this.
With a step-up transformer at the source, the voltage is increased, thereby reducing the current in the transmission lines since power loss in...

Summary

Lassa fever can cause severe sensorineural hearing loss, a rare complication. This hearing impairment may manifest during both acute and later stages of the viral hemorrhagic fever, likely due to an immune response.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Neurology
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic fever caused by arena viruses.
  • Neurological complications are common, with sensorineural hearing loss being a rare sequela.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report cases of severe sensorineural hearing loss in Lassa fever patients.
  • To highlight the occurrence of hearing loss during the acute phase of Lassa fever.

Main Methods:

  • Case presentation of two female patients with Lassa fever.
  • Confirmation of Lassa fever through immunoserological and Lassa-virus-specific RT-PCR.

Main Results:

  • Both patients developed severe sensorineural hearing loss.
  • Hearing loss occurred during the acute phase of Lassa fever infection.

Conclusions:

  • Sensorineural hearing loss associated with Lassa fever can occur in acute and convalescent stages.
  • The mechanism of hearing loss is likely immune-mediated.
