Summary

Writer's cramp risk increases with daily writing time and abrupt increases in writing load. Higher education, head trauma, and myopia are also associated risk factors for this task-specific focal dystonia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify risk factors associated with writer's cramp through a case-control study.

  • A case-control study involving 104 patients with writer's cramp and matched controls.

  • Higher education (college/university degree) was more frequent in cases (OR=4.6).
  • Increased daily writing time (P-trend=0.001) and a sudden rise in writing time in the preceding year (OR=5.7) elevated risk.

Conclusions:

  • A dose-response relationship exists between daily handwriting duration and writer's cramp.
  • Acute triggers, such as a sudden increase in writing load, may overwhelm homeostatic regulation of cortical plasticity in predisposed individuals, leading to dystonia.
