Electrodeposition

Electrodeposition is a technique used to separate an analyte from interferents by electrochemical processes. Here, the analyte is a metal ion that can be deposited on an electrode immersed in the sample solution. The electrochemical setup consists of an anode and a cathode. When an electric current is applied to the setup, oxidation occurs at the anode. At the cathode, which consists of a large metal surface, metal ions undergo reduction and deposit onto the surface.

Incomplete electrode extraction during cochlear implant revision is a rare complication. Surgeons should discuss this risk with patients and families before revision surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Cochlear implantation is a common procedure for hearing restoration.
  • Revision cochlear implantation is sometimes necessary due to device failure or other complications.
  • Electrode array extraction is a critical step during revision surgery.

Observation:

  • This case series reports 3 instances of incomplete electrode extraction during revision cochlear implantation.
  • The electrode array fractured during removal, leaving a portion within the cochlea.
  • These events occurred in pediatric patients across three tertiary care centers.

Findings:

  • Incomplete electrode extraction is a rare intraoperative complication.
  • Management strategies varied among the surgical teams in the reported cases.

  • The complication was not typically anticipated during preoperative counseling.
  • Implications:

    • Preoperative counseling for revision cochlear implantation should include the potential risk of incomplete electrode extraction.
    • Awareness of this complication may aid in surgical planning and patient management.
    • Further research into prevention and management strategies is warranted.
