Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Psychometrics
  • Gerontology

Background:

  • Memory self-report is crucial for understanding subjective experiences of memory.
  • Validating memory self-report scales is essential for accurate assessment.
  • Depression can influence self-perceptions of cognitive function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between memory self-report, self-rated depression, and objective memory performance.
  • To establish the concurrent validity of the Memory Assessment Clinics Self-Rating Scale (MAC-S).

Main Methods:

  • 125 healthy adults participated.
  • Canonical correlation analyses were used.
  • Computer-simulated everyday memory tasks assessed objective performance.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Self-rated memory and objective memory performance shared 27.9%–29.4% of common variance.
  • The MAC-S demonstrated initial concurrent validity.
  • Self-rated depression was also considered in relation to memory self-perception.

Conclusions:

  • The MAC-S shows promise as a valid measure of memory self-perception.
  • Psychometric properties are key for developing reliable self-report memory scales.
  • Understanding the interplay between self-report, objective performance, and mood is important.
