Purpose of the Study:

  • To replicate a web-based survey on brain donation motivations using a paper-based format.
  • To capture a broader demographic cross-section of the general population.
  • To identify characteristics and motivations of brain donors.

Main Methods:

  • A paper-based questionnaire was mailed to 1,323 consented and registered brain donors.
  • A 3-month period was allowed for questionnaire completion and return.
  • Data from 658 returned questionnaires (53% response rate) were analyzed using SPSS version 10.

Main Results:

  • Interest in brain donation spans all age groups, with the over 65s being the largest demographic (30.7%).
  • Participants were predominantly female (60.6%), married (49.2%), with children (65.8%), employed (52.9%), and tertiary educated (73.3%).
  • Key motivations included benefiting science (27.6%), medicine (23.9%), family illness (17.5%), and the community (16.6%).

Conclusions:

  • Brain donation interest exists across all age demographics, challenging previous findings.
  • Targeting older, female, non-religious or Christian Australians who have pledged other donations may enhance recruitment.
  • Integrating brain donation into national transplant programs is recommended.
