Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Suicidal behavior is a significant public health concern.
  • Understanding long-term determinants of suicidal behavior in depressed individuals is crucial for effective prevention and treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify predictors of suicidal behavior over an 18-year period in a cohort of depressed patients.
  • To explore the differential determinants for various aspects of suicidal behavior, including presence, frequency, intent, and medical threat.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal study of 89 depressed in-patients.
  • Inclusion of clinical features, personality traits, and history of loss as potential predictors.
  • Application of generalized linear modeling to analyze relationships between variables and suicidal behavior outcomes.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Severe dysphoria, a history of alcoholism, and chronic physical illness were significant predictors of suicidal attempts.
  • Distinct variables were found to predict the frequency, intent, and medical severity of subsequent suicidal attempts.

Conclusions:

  • The determinants of suicidal behavior are multifaceted and vary depending on the specific aspect of the behavior being considered.
  • This research highlights the need for individualized assessment and intervention strategies targeting different facets of suicidal behavior in depressed patients.
