Bonanno's Theory of Grieving01:17

Bonanno's Theory of Grieving

Grieving is a complex psychological and emotional process that varies significantly among individuals. George Bonanno's research on bereavement identified four distinct patterns of grieving, offering a nuanced understanding of how people cope with significant loss, such as the death of a spouse, over extended periods. These patterns — resilience, recovery, chronic dysfunction, and delayed grief — highlight the diversity in emotional responses and adaptive mechanisms.

Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Group Therapy01:26

Group Therapy

Group therapy is a sociocultural approach to psychological treatment, where individuals with shared psychological challenges come together under the guidance of a mental health professional. This therapeutic modality offers unique opportunities for individuals to connect, share, and grow within the context of a supportive group. By fostering mutual understanding and collaboration, group therapy can address a range of psychological concerns effectively, often complementing or surpassing the...
Aging01:26

Aging

Aging is a complex biological phenomenon influenced by various processes that affect cellular and systemic functions. Several prominent theories attempt to explain its mechanisms, highlighting cellular limitations, oxidative damage, and hormonal changes as central factors in aging.
Cellular Clock Theory
The cellular clock theory posits that the human lifespan is closely tied to the finite capacity of cells to divide, a phenomenon governed by telomeres, which are protective caps at the ends of...
Alzheimer's Disease: Treatment01:22

Alzheimer's Disease: Treatment

Alzheimer's Disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disorder, is pathologically identified by amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles composed of tau protein. AD pharmacotherapy aims to manage cognitive symptoms, delay disease progression, and treat behavioral symptoms. The treatment is primarily symptomatic and palliative, with no definitive disease-modifying therapy available. Cholinesterase inhibitors, including donepezil (Aricept), rivastigmine (Exelon), and galantamine (Razadyne), are...
Drug Dosing: Geriatric Patients01:15

Drug Dosing: Geriatric Patients

Elderly individuals encompass a diverse population with varying degrees of age-related physiological changes. Defining the elderly presents challenges, as the geriatric population is often arbitrarily categorized as individuals older than 65. However, many individuals in this group lead active and healthy lives, with an increasing number surpassing 85 years and falling into the older elderly category. Physiological changes associated with aging impact performance capacity and homeostatic...

Summary

This study shows that a therapeutic forgiveness intervention improved long-term forgiveness and reduced depression in older adults. Physical health saw short-term gains, but anxiety and social support remained unchanged.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Social Work
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Forgiveness interventions are increasingly recognized for their therapeutic potential.
  • Social work with older adults can benefit from evidence-based therapeutic models.
  • The biopsychosocial model is crucial for understanding aging and well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the applicability of Enright's therapeutic model of forgiveness in social work with older adults.
  • To assess the impact of a group forgiveness intervention on forgiveness and biopsychosocial functioning in older adults.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 20 older adults (aged 57-82) participated in 8 weekly forgiveness group sessions.
  • Biopsychosocial functioning and forgiveness measures were collected pre- and post-intervention.
  • A 4-month follow-up session assessed long-term effects.

Main Results:

  • Participants demonstrated significant long-term improvements in forgiveness and reduced depression.
  • A short-term enhancement in physical health was observed.
  • No significant changes were noted in anxiety levels or social support.

Conclusions:

  • The therapeutic model of forgiveness is applicable and beneficial for social work interventions with older adults.
  • Forgiveness interventions can lead to sustained improvements in emotional well-being and reduced depressive symptoms in later life.
  • Further research should explore interventions targeting anxiety and social support in this population.
