Stem-like cells may exist in prostate cancer cell lines, but CD133 is not a reliable marker for identifying them. Further research is needed to understand their role in tumor growth.

  • DU145 holoclones demonstrated self-renewal capacity.
  • A small fraction of CD133+ cells (0.01%) and BCRP+ cells (0.15%) were found in DU145 cells, but these did not show enhanced clonogenicity or holoclone formation.
  • Conclusions:

    • Established prostate cancer cell lines may harbor stem-like cell populations.
    • CD133 expression does not enrich for stem-like cells in these PCa models.
    • Alpha2-integrin and BCRP show potential as stem cell markers, while CK5/CK18 aid in distinguishing transient amplifying cells.
