The ID-SURE program effectively increased undergraduate research fellows' participation and positive attitudes toward interdisciplinary activities. While research products showed no difference, trained students exhibited enhanced interdisciplinary behaviors, crucial for scientific collaboration.
Area of Science:
- Health Promotion Research
- Undergraduate Education
- Interdisciplinary Training
Background:
- The ID-SURE program aimed to develop and evaluate an interdisciplinary health promotion curriculum for undergraduates.
- Key objectives included curriculum design, assessment measure development, and comparative analysis of training outcomes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the impact of an interdisciplinary training curriculum on undergraduate research fellows.
- To develop and validate measures for evaluating interdisciplinary training processes and products.
- To compare outcomes between students who received interdisciplinary training and those who did not.
Main Methods:
- A longitudinal study involved 101 students from 2005-2007, assessing attitudes and behaviors pre- and post-training.
- Research product quality was evaluated at program conclusion.
- A comparison group of 70 students from a non-interdisciplinary program was used.
Main Results:
- Interdisciplinary curriculum exposure increased participation and positive attitudes towards interdisciplinary activities.
- No significant differences were observed in the integrative quality of research products compared to the control group.
- Students trained in interdisciplinary research techniques demonstrated significantly more interdisciplinary behaviors.
Conclusions:
- The ID-SURE program demonstrates efficacy in equipping undergraduates with transdisciplinary skills for scientific collaboration.
- The study contributes a replicable interdisciplinary health promotion curriculum and validated assessment tools for training programs.
- Findings support the value of structured interdisciplinary training for enhancing collaborative research competencies.
