Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review clinical outcomes of suction electrocautery adenoidectomy (ECA) in pediatric patients.
  • To compare ECA with curette adenoidectomy based on published literature.

  • Systematic review of the MEDLINE database for studies on ECA.

  • Subjective success was high (95.0%), with a low observed adenoid regrowth rate (2.8%) in the limited objective evaluations.

Conclusions:

  • The evidence suggests ECA is superior to curette adenoidectomy regarding reduced intraoperative bleeding and operative time.
  • Long-term outcome data for ECA are scarce.
  • ECA appears to have a low rate of adenoid regrowth and complications.
