    Summary

Hypothalamic stimulation affects blood pressure in cats. Adrenoreceptors in the hypothalamus modulate these pressor and depressor responses, indicating their role in cardiovascular regulation.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Cardiovascular Physiology

    Background:

    • The hypothalamus plays a crucial role in regulating blood pressure.
    • Adrenoreceptors are known to be involved in cardiovascular control.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and function of adrenoreceptors within the cat hypothalamus.
    • To determine the role of hypothalamic adrenoreceptors in modulating blood pressure responses to electrical stimulation.

    Main Methods:

    • Cats were anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium.
    • Electrical stimulation of the posterior and anterior hypothalamus was performed using a push-pull cannula.
    • The hypothalamus was superfused with alpha- and beta-adrenoreceptor blocking drugs, as well as agonists and local anesthetics.

    Main Results:

    • Stimulation of the posterior hypothalamus elicited a pressor response, inhibited by alpha- and beta-adrenoreceptor blockers.
    • Stimulation of the anterior hypothalamus elicited a depressor response, inhibited by alpha-adrenoreceptor blockers.
    • Combined blockade of alpha- and beta-adrenoreceptors showed an additive inhibitory effect.
    • Phenylephrine abolished the inhibitory effect of phentolamine on the depressor response.

    Conclusions:

    • Adrenoreceptors are present and functional within the cat hypothalamus.
    • These hypothalamic adrenoreceptors significantly influence blood pressure regulation via stimulation of specific hypothalamic areas.
