Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder01:30

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

792
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings....

Oppositional Defiant Disorder

648
A persistent pattern of angry or irritable mood, defiant behavior, or vindictiveness characterizes Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Symptoms must occur over at least six months, involve interactions with individuals beyond siblings, and meet specific diagnostic criteria to be clinically significant. The disorder affects emotional regulation, social interactions, and behavior, often manifesting early in life and influencing long-term development and functioning.

Revisionist Views of Adolescent and Adult Cognition

288
A revisionist approach to Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development has brought new insights that challenge and reinterpret his established ideas. Piaget proposed that the formal operational stage, emerging in adolescence, represents the culmination of cognitive maturity. During this stage, individuals are said to develop abstract thinking, engage in systematic problem-solving, and show a form of egocentrism, believing others are as preoccupied with their behavior as they are...

Cognitive Development During Adulthood

792
Cognitive development continues throughout adulthood, undergoing significant shifts across early, middle, and late stages. Individual transition occurs from adolescent idealism to pragmatic and adaptable thinking in early adulthood. During this period, individuals learn to integrate personal beliefs with the recognition that other perspectives are equally valid. Exposure to the complexities of modern society, diverse experiences, and higher education contribute to this adaptive thought process,...

Alzheimer's Disease: Overview

1.6K
Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a continually advancing neurodegenerative disorder, distinguished by escalating memory loss, cognitive dysfunction, and dementia. The disease unfolds in three stages: preclinical, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and dementia. Its onset is insidious, and the progression gradual, with the cause not well explained by other disorders.
The clinical diagnosis of AD hinges on the presence of memory and other cognitive impairments. Biomarkers, such as changes in Aβ...

Conduct Disorder01:28

Conduct Disorder

491
Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. The diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder require the presence of at least three problematic behaviors within the past 12 months, with at least one occurring in the past six months. These behaviors are grouped into four categories: aggression toward people and animals; destruction of property;...

Summary

Diagnostic criteria for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults are lacking in the DSM-IV-TR. Clinicians need to modify current criteria for accurate adult ADHD diagnosis until revised guidelines are available.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Background:

  • The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) criteria for ADHD were primarily designed for pediatric populations.
  • This has led to challenges in accurately diagnosing ADHD in adult patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the limitations of the current DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
  • To suggest interim modifications for clinical practice.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of existing DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for ADHD.
  • Identification of specific problem areas concerning adult diagnosis.

Main Results:

  • Key issues identified include symptom descriptions, diagnostic thresholds, gender bias, and age at onset.

  • Current criteria demonstrate limited suitability for diagnosing ADHD in adults.
  • Conclusions:

    • The DSM-IV-TR criteria require adaptation for effective adult ADHD diagnosis.
    • Modified application of current criteria is recommended pending the release of revised DSM-V guidelines.
