REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD) is a sleep disorder characterized by the absence of muscle paralysis that normally occurs during the REM phase of sleep. Summary

Background:

  • Previous research suggested a correlation between epileptiform activity on electroencephalograms (EEGs) and developmental speech-language disorder (DSLD).
  • The precise nature and strength of this association remain subjects of investigation, particularly in well-defined pediatric cohorts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the strength of the association between epileptiform EEG activity and severe DSLD in children.
  • To compare EEG abnormality frequencies between language-normal children and those with severe DSLD.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 45 language-normal children and 54 children with severe DSLD underwent sedated sleep EEGs.
  • Children with DSLD received comprehensive speech-language, hearing, and psychological assessments.
  • DSLD was defined by scores at least 2 standard deviations below the mean on speech-language measures with a performance IQ of at least 80.

Main Results:

  • The study did not support a strong association between abnormal EEG findings and DSLD.
  • A weak, non-significant relationship was observed between DSLD and epileptiform EEG activity.
  • Epileptiform EEG activity was significantly associated with lower performance IQ (p=0.04).

Conclusions:

  • Previously reported strong associations between epileptiform activity and DSLD are questioned by these findings.
  • The results suggest that the association may be weaker than previously thought, especially in purer cohorts of children with severe language impairments and without seizures.
