Area of Science:

  • Periodontology
  • Materials Science
  • Biomaterials Engineering

Background:

  • Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) is a widely used periodontal regenerative procedure.
  • Existing assessment methods for GTR lack quantitative analysis of mineral content in regenerated tissues.
  • Quantitative X-ray microprobe analysis (QXRM) offers a novel approach to evaluate hard tissue mineralization.

Observation:

  • This study utilized electron microprobe analysis to examine newly formed hard tissue.
  • The tissue was analyzed 3 years post-GTR treatment in a patient with aggressive periodontitis.
  • QXRM was employed to assess the mineralization of regenerated periodontal hard tissues.

Findings:

  • Quantitative analysis revealed a calcium/phosphorus mass ratio of 1.50 +/- 0.38 in the regenerated hard tissue.

  • This indicates successful mineralization of the newly formed bone-like tissue.
  • The peak-to-background method was utilized for accurate quantitative analysis.
  • Implications:

    • QXRM is a valuable tool for accurately assessing the degree of mineralization in small periodontal tissue samples.
    • This technique can provide objective data on the quality of regenerated tissue following GTR.
    • Further research can explore QXRM for evaluating other periodontal regenerative materials and techniques.
