Background:

Periodontitis is an infectious oral disease leading to tooth loss.
Understanding patient perceptions is crucial for effective management.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore and describe patients' lived experiences and perceptions of periodontitis.

Main Methods:

Qualitative study using phenomenography.
Interviews conducted with 10 patients at a specialist periodontology clinic in southern Sweden.

Main Results:

Identified two main categories: perceptions of the disease and perceptions of disease control.
Patients' understanding of periodontitis, its causes, diagnosis, and consequences varied.
Oral health-related quality of life was impacted; patient comprehension of treatment requirements was not guaranteed.

Conclusions:

Acceptance and control of periodontitis reduce daily life inconvenience.
Achieving disease control fosters an optimistic outlook, mitigating anxiety related to tooth loss.
