Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Sports Medicine
  • Knee Arthroscopy

Background:

  • Lateral meniscal cysts are often treated surgically.
  • Arthroscopic cystectomy and partial meniscectomy are common procedures.

Observation:

  • Thirty-six patients underwent arthroscopic surgery, with two having open cystectomy.
  • Follow-up averaged 39 months, revealing four recurrences.
  • Five athletes were dissatisfied; four patients with early arthritis experienced residual pain but maintained normal function.

Findings:

  • Arthroscopy demonstrated a high safety profile with low morbidity and recurrence rates for lateral meniscal cysts.
  • A horizontal meniscal tear was consistently observed in arthroscopically treated cases.
  • The etiology of meniscal tears (traumatic vs. degenerative) remains unclear.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Arthroscopy alone is a viable and supported treatment for lateral meniscal cysts.
  • Further research is needed to determine the origin of associated meniscal tears.
  • Minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques offer favorable outcomes in managing knee joint pathology.
