Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how experimental stroke outcomes vary with aging and biologic sex.
  • To determine if observed sex differences in stroke are intrinsic or due to estrogen loss.
  • To inform the development of more relevant stroke therapies for the elderly population.

Main Methods:

  • Middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model in young and aging mice of both sexes.
  • Assessment of stroke outcomes, including infarct size and blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability.
  • Ovariectomy was performed in young female mice to evaluate the role of estrogen.
