Summary

Routine prothrombin time (PT) screening before gynecologic surgery is not useful. Most patients have normal results, and abnormal results rarely change patient care when no specific indications exist.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Hematology
  • Surgical Patient Management

Background:

  • Preoperative prothrombin time (PT) tests are standard for detecting bleeding disorders.
  • Their utility in elective gynecologic surgery requires evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the clinical value of routine preoperative PT screening in patients undergoing elective gynecologic operations.

Main Methods:

  • A 6-month prospective evaluation of screening PT tests was conducted.
  • Patient charts were reviewed for abnormal PT results and clinical indications.

Main Results:

  • Out of 1546 patients, 98.1% had normal PT results.
  • Of 30 abnormal results, 20 provided no clinical benefit; 5 had prior indications for testing.

Related Experiment Videos

Conclusions:

  • Routine preoperative PT testing lacks value in elective gynecologic surgery without specific indications.
  • Eliminating routine PT screening can streamline patient care.
