Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate structural and diffusional brain abnormalities related to lifetime alcohol consumption (LAC) in non-alcohol-dependent individuals.
  • To explore potential sex differences in alcohol's effects on the brain.

Main Methods:

  • Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) were used on MRI scans of 114 males and 97 females.
  • Analyses included gray matter volume (GMV), white matter volume (WMV), fractional anisotropy (FA), and mean diffusivity (MD) in relation to LAC, adjusted for age and total intracranial volume (TIV).

Main Results:

  • No significant LAC-related global or regional GMV or WMV abnormalities were found in either sex.
  • No LAC-related regional FA abnormalities were detected.
  • A significant LAC-related increase in mean diffusivity (MD) was observed in the right amygdala exclusively in female subjects.

Conclusions:

  • The findings suggest a potential vulnerability of the female brain to alcohol's effects.
  • A link between subtle abnormalities in the right amygdala and alcohol misuse may exist, particularly in women.
