Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively examine the impact of specific altruistic behaviors on the development of major depression (MD).
  • To differentiate the effects of financial support, unpaid assistance, and emotional support on future MD diagnoses.

  • Analysis of data from the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS) (1995-1996) and its follow-up study (1998).
  • Inclusion of a weighted sample of 563 participants.
  • Statistical analysis to assess the association between various forms of altruism and the incidence of MD.

  • Providing financial support ($10+/month) to non-family members was significantly associated with an increased risk of developing MD (OR: 2.64, 95% CI: 1.05-6.62).
  • No significant association was found between providing unpaid assistance or emotional support and the development of MD.

  • Financial contributions to individuals outside one's family may pose a risk factor for developing major depression.
  • The findings suggest that the specific nature of altruistic acts, particularly financial giving, is crucial when assessing mental health risks.
