Summary

Lactoferrin (Lf) is expressed in several human bone tumors, particularly giant cell tumors and osteoid osteomas. While found in fetal osteoblasts, Lf expression showed no correlation with hormone receptors or tumor growth.

Main Results:

  • Lactoferrin (Lf) immuno-expression was detected in 19 out of 50 bone tumors, notably in giant cell tumors (GCTs), osteoid osteomas, chondroblastomas, adamantinoma, and myeloma.
  • Lf was expressed by osteoblasts exclusively in fetal bone samples.
  • No immunoreactivity for ER and PR was found in neoplastic samples, and no correlation was observed between Lf, sex steroid hormone receptors, or the Ki-67 labeling index.

Conclusions:

  • Lactoferrin (Lf) is expressed in specific human bone tumors, including bone-forming types.
  • Lf expression in osteoblasts of fetal bone and in bone-forming tumors suggests a potential role in human bone formation.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the precise function of Lf in bone biology.
