Area of Science:

  • Reproductive endocrinology and pulmonology.

Background:

  • Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a potential complication of ovulation induction therapies.
  • Pleural effusion is an uncommon manifestation of OHSS.

Observation:

  • This study examines OHSS as a cause of pleural effusion in young women.
  • The effusions observed are characterized as exudates, distinguishing them from transudates seen in conditions like Demons-Meigs syndrome.

Findings:

  • OHSS should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pleural effusion in women of reproductive age undergoing ovulation induction.
  • The effusions associated with OHSS are exudative in nature.

Implications:

  • Recognizing OHSS as an etiology of pleural effusion aids in timely diagnosis and management.
  • Understanding the exudative nature of these effusions can guide further diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
  • The usual regression of effusions suggests a favorable prognosis with appropriate management of OHSS.
