Kidney Transplant II: Surgical Procedure

Preoperative ManagementThe primary goals of preoperative management in kidney transplantation are to optimize the patient’s metabolic state and prepare them for surgery through diet adjustments, necessary dialysis, and tailored medical treatment. This phase also involves comprehensive infection screening and patient education about the surgical procedure and postoperative care to improve outcomes and adherence.Medical ManagementA comprehensive evaluation is required for both the living donor...

Kidney Transplant I: Introduction

A kidney transplant is a surgical approach that involves replacing a non-functioning kidney with a healthy one from a donor. This procedure is often a treatment option for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. The method requires careful recipient selection, including evaluating various medical and psychosocial factors. These criteria vary between transplant centers but generally include assessments of the patient's overall health, adherence to medical recommendations, and lifestyle...

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Transplantation

Background:

  • Live-donor nephrectomy is crucial for kidney transplantation.
  • Minimally invasive techniques are increasingly explored for donor safety and recovery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility and safety of transperitoneal laparoscopic nephrectomy in live kidney donors.

Main Methods:

  • Two live donors underwent transperitoneal laparoscopic nephrectomy.
  • Surgical outcomes, including operative time, blood loss, and warm ischemia time, were recorded.
  • Donor and recipient outcomes were monitored post-operatively.

Main Results:

  • The procedure demonstrated acceptable operative times and minimal blood loss.
  • Grafted kidneys showed rapid urine production post-reperfusion.
  • Both donors experienced quick recovery, returning to normal renal function within two days and discharge by day seven.
  • Recipients achieved normal renal function within three days.

Conclusions:

  • Transperitoneal laparoscopic nephrectomy is a safe and effective option for live kidney donation.
  • The technique yields kidneys with satisfactory vascular and ureteral structures for transplantation.
  • This approach offers benefits for both donor recovery and graft quality.
