Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the normal size of the thoracic aorta in Thai individuals.
  • To analyze the influence of age and sex on thoracic aorta dimensions.

Main Methods:

  • Thoracic Multidetector Computed Tomography (MDCT) images were analyzed for 73 Thai males and 56 Thai females across four age groups.
  • Aortic diameters were measured at multiple levels and correlated with age, sex, and vertebral body dimensions.

Main Results:

  • Normal aortic configuration with smooth tapering was observed.
  • Mean aortic diameters ranged from 3.12 cm (proximal ascending) to 2.03 cm (diaphragm).
  • Aortic size was significantly larger in males and increased with age; a weak correlation with vertebral body size was noted.

Conclusions:

  • Normal thoracic aorta dimensions for the Thai population were established.
  • Age and sex are significant determinants of thoracic aorta size.
  • Vertebral body width shows a weak correlation with aortic dimensions.
