The legal system. Part 1: it's not just for lawyers

This article is the first of two providing an introduction to the foundational elements of the English legal system. The 'English legal system' is a rather generic term that is often used to refer to the different sources of law and the court system in which the law is practiced. Students of law will study the English legal system as a specific topic, but it is as equally important for those who work within a profession that is regulated by the law (as nursing is) to also develop an understanding of the legal boundaries within which such a profession works. Part one, therefore, will consider the matters that form the cornerstone of our legal system, such as the constitution, and it will also explain the specific legal terms and doctrines that influence how our law is made and developed. Part two will then go on to consider the different sources of law that can be found within the English legal system. The aim of these articles is to describe these principles in a way that makes them easily understandable by those who are not involved with practicing law but who instead work within other disciplines, such as nursing.
