Summary

Patients referred for fatigue without clear endocrine issues do not develop significant future health problems. This suggests fatigue diagnoses are reliable and not early signs of hidden endocrine disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the long-term outcomes of patients referred for fatigue.
  • To determine if initial assessments for subtle endocrine pathology are reliable.
  • To ascertain if fatigue symptoms predict future endocrine disease.

Main Methods:

  • A five-year prospective study of 101 patients.
  • Patients were referred for unexplained fatigue with no initial signs of treatable endocrine pathology.
  • Outcomes assessed included morbidity, mortality, and development of endocrine disorders.
