Unilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN DBS) in Parkinson disease (PD) patients leads to significant weight gain within one year. This weight increase helps counteract the weight loss often seen in advanced PD.

  • Regression analyses were used to assess weight changes.
  • Main Results:

    • Patients gained an average of 4.3 kg at 12 months post-unilateral STN DBS (p<0.001).
    • This weight gain was significantly greater by 4.8 kg compared to controls (p=0.015).
    • Weight gain occurred in 85% of unilateral STN DBS patients at 12 months (p<0.0001).

    Conclusions:

    • Unilateral STN DBS in PD patients is associated with significant weight gain.
    • This weight gain may offset the weight loss typically observed in advanced PD.
    • Unilateral STN DBS is a potential intervention for managing weight loss in PD.
