Background:

First week mortality (FWM) is a key indicator of chick quality and economic efficiency in the poultry meat production chain.
FWM significantly impacts the price paid by broiler farms to hatcheries, making it a critical metric.
It is a commonly used efficiency measure alongside egg production and hatchability in the breeder-hatchery-broiler system.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate factors influencing first week mortality (FWM) in broiler chicks.
To analyze the relationship between various production parameters and chick survival rates.

Main Methods:

Analysis of field data from 482 broiler farms across 2 Dutch hatcheries, covering 16,365 flocks from 2004-2006.
Data represented 79% of day-old chicks delivered to broiler farms.

Statistical analysis to identify significant correlations between FWM and influencing factors.
