Summary

Some patients with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) present with both macular and remote lesions. These remote lesions appear to have minimal impact on the overall visual outcome in PCV patients.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) is a subtype of exudative age-related macular degeneration.
  • PCV is characterized by abnormal vascular networks and polyp-like structures under the retina.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe cases of macular PCV presenting with co-existing remote lesions.
  • To investigate the characteristics and clinical significance of these remote lesions.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case series of six patients (seven eyes) with macular PCV and remote lesions.
  • Ophthalmic examinations included indocyanine green angiography, fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography.

Main Results:

  • All seven eyes exhibited exudative macular lesions and distinct remote polypoidal lesions.

  • No vascular connections were identified between macular and remote lesions using angiography or OCT.
  • Visual acuity varied initially but showed stabilization or improvement in most eyes after treatment for macular lesions.
  • Conclusions:

    • Macular PCV can occur concurrently with anatomically separate remote polypoidal lesions.
    • Remote lesions in PCV appear to have a limited impact on long-term visual prognosis.
